Examples of Famous International Arbitration Cases:

  • The South China Sea Arbitration:This case involved the Philippines bringing a claim against China under Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea regarding maritime claims in the South China Sea. The arbitration focused on issues like historic rights and the source of maritime entitlements. 
  • The Yukos Cases:These cases involved claims against the Russian Federation by investors in the former Yukos Oil Company, alleging expropriation and breaches of the Energy Charter Treaty. The arbitration resulted in significant awards against Russia. 
  • The Island of Palmas Case:This case, between the Netherlands and the United States, concerned the sovereignty of the Island of Palmas (or Miangas). It is a landmark case in international law, particularly regarding the acquisition of territory and the principle of effective occupation.
